The SOC project started in 2016 with a companywide ideation contest. Employees from every organizational sector were invited to participate and send ideas for the redesign of the Organizational Charts (a visualization that correctly depicts the organizational structure of a company).
Soon it became clear that the project was not only about rethinking and redesigning the Org Charts. The vision to transform and expand a classic Org Chart visualization to an Enterprise Suite in order to create a digital workplace for over 300.000 employees worldwide, the Siemens Organizational Cosmos, was born.
After a pitch invitation convinced the decision makers to cooperate with us, we worked directly with the Siemens Strategy department and multiple stakeholders across the organization as well as other third party solution providers.
We’ve been working in an agile setup in 3-week-sprints using tools like JIRA, Confluence, Slack to structure our sprints, organize our user stories, documenting results and decisions.
Our role was to create and deliver the UX and UI part of the project, accompanied by workshops, testing set-ups, user interviews and multiple consulting processes. Further we worked closely with the development team taking care of quality management and correct implementation of the concept and design.
If Siemens knew what
Siemens knows!
Interconnect and enhance enterprise data to drive the digital transfromation process. Visualize & link data streams in one place to strive for maximum organizational transparency in order to create a digital workplace for all employees.
The SOC interconnects all employees at Siemens. Through each module the company can be navigated and explored from another perspective.
Module
With the implementation of the People Profile employees have the possibility to publish their own data and to create a profile in order to become visible as an individual within the company with the goal to connect and network with other Siemens employees or to enhance an internal career development.
Employees have a basic personal record available and can expand it through entering:
• Skills
• Interests
• Work Experience
• Education
• Accomplishments
Top features:
• CV exports to PDF
• Linkedin data imports
• Data indexing for the SOC search
Module
The Org Charts connect organzational data, structured in hierarchal fashion, with the people data of that OrgUnit (including head counts), matching job offers and the possibiltiy for employer career development through the Job Tagging feature.
Cooperating closely with HR and their “Own your career” campaign we’ve developed a feature together called “Job Tagging”. It empowers employees to kickstart their career within the corporation. Employees can leave virtual tags with the departments of their interest. For each tag set, they will receive alerts in case new job ads are posted.
For managers it's a great opportunity to get to know people who show interest in their department. Taggers might be good candidates to consider for future team plans or succession agendas.
Module
The "Locations" module started with a common employee use-case in mind: Imagine you have a business trip ahead to a Siemens location you have never been to. Locations supports employees to find out everything about a Siemens location, departments, services, restaurants and even hotels nearby and how to get there!
Module
The right person for the right job. With Project Organzation there's been another step towards a more transparent and agile organization. The goal was to feature projects and their setups including different project roles and open positons in order to staff projects and match the right projects with the right resources. No need to search for the right person anymore Project Org is matching people to tasks and vacant project roles.
Module
What's a unit producing? Portfolio offers a structured summary about the entrepreneurial responsibility of business units along the value chain from production to consumption across all business sectores.
Throughout the project phase the whole SOC vision was challenged with an additional business goal: to scale the product and transform it to a multitenant software solution.
Before the decision was made to transform the SOC into a multitenant software solution the SOC followed the visual guidelines of Siemens. With the transformation it was necessary to create an independent design and component system, that could be easily adaptable for other companies and brands.
